Our Roc Day gathering was very casual. Angela brought a drum carder and fiber for the fiber blend party. Sandy contributed some East Fresian wool, Mary brought angora brushings, and Patricia provided the hit of the party with brightly colored mohair locks. Several members made custom blends.
Mary, Angela, and Joann brought wheels for musical spinning wheels and our guests got to try their hands - and feet - at spinning.
Our fiber tool guessing game got everyone thinking, trying to find and identify 14 fiber tools by touch only. Mary was the winner with all 14
Potluck snacks were enjoyed.
Sandy and Angela brought their rag rugs featured in the January 2007 member gallery. Patricia brought her new inkle loom. Sylvia proudly showed off pictures of her new grandchild.

According to founder Patricia H:
"At the meeting, I was asked “What do we do?” Well, we do whatever interest us. We get together, have a good time and explore, mainly fiber related crafts, but just about anything that sounds interesting. We have a booth for demonstration at Mayfair (our meeting for May) that anyone can participate by demonstrating their hobby or craft, or just stop and sit for a while and visit. We have been known to take outings to check out yarn shops or an art show at the Museum. There is an interesting café, gallery/shop in Como called Hope and Art. Anyone feel like a field trip? Our next meeting will be woven /beaded pins (Feb. 10). We are planning a workshop decorating gourds and how about those zipper purses! We have decorated socks with beads, painted floor mats, tried to weave pine needle baskets, had a natural dye workshop and a woven basket workshop to mention a few. We also can sit around and work on our projects or not and just visit and talk! (Oh, yes, and eat) We are also game for making items or ? for the community and/or charities. Anything else sound interesting?"
Handspinning Art & Technique by Allen Fannin
Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, New York, NY 1970
This book covers the basics. Fibers (natural, man-made and synthetic), preparation methods, tools (hand spindles, high wheel, double drive flyer wheel and cards) and techniques are discussed and illustrated with clear photographs. He rounds out the discussion with yarn design and examples of project design decisions.
Mr. Fannin taught himself to spin. His techniques and vocabulary are from the commercial world. I first found this book in the 1980's when I was trying to teach myself to spin and it was way over my head. He dissects everything to the basics. Now I am able to follow the detailed explanations. I have a greater understanding of my equipment. I feel he was a pioneer researcher/writer for hand spinners. I believe there are better articles and books out now for beginning spinners to learn spinning technique but for those who like to know the engineering behind the wheel, this is a great book.
All meeting refreshments are Pot Luck.
