Spinning on the River - January 2009

Note form the President

January Meeting: January is our traditional Roc Day meeting. Please bring fiber to share. You are encouraged to bring colored fiber and different breeds and types for blending. Treats will be pot luck as usual. It is fun to have musical spinning wheels this meeting as well so be sure to bring your wheel for everyone to try. We will have the "identify the tools" basket so bring 3 things to put into the basket. If anyone else has a game to share feel free to let me know what supplies we need. See you there!

Minutes from December 21st, 2009

Members attending: Maxine Gray, Susan (Jingle Bells) Harrington, Mary Lessman, Jackie MacNamara, Sandy Parkinson, Sylvia Sachs and Karen Saunders. Patricia Holmberg was unable to make the meeting and Kaaren Reid was having car trouble and both sent best wishes to all for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Guild members.

No announcements came in this month. Ideas for a workshop next year were proposed. Among the ideas was an introduction to fibers by Marcie Petrini like she gave several years ago at another guild, carding with color and novelty yarns. Sylvia asked where the money in the treasury has come from. The majority of new funds was from tuition for the Beginners Spinners class. Nearly all the hand outs and give away fibers were donated. A small amount was realized from the Workshop. One check is still outstanding and I will follow up on that.

Show and Tell

Our pot luck table was full with everything from healthy wrap sandwiches to a big decorated cake made of cupcakes. Hot apple cider was good as the day and room were cold. For future reference, one of our members is allergic to Cinnamon-even the lovely aroma-so if you are bringing treats with cinnamon please mark it accordingly.

Karen Saunders recommends the Spunky Eclectic Fiber Club. There is open enrollment until January 19th. http://www.spunkyeclectic.com/spunkyclub.htm.

Jane’s first wheel-spun yarn

Jane’s first wheel-spun yarn

New spinner Jane is also the proud new owner of a Kromski Minstrel spinning wheel. She's so excited she can't keep her feet or her yarns on the ground.

Mary spun up the soft gray alpaca/wool blend she got from Sylvia in the white elephant exchange. One ply of the large pink skein is mohair Maxine brought. All else but the blue is recovered dye wool-even the skein ties.

Spinners - please send pictures of your handspun projects for future issues. Your work just might inspire someone else.

Area Spinners on Ravelry

One is that there is a new group just for Memphis Ravelers on Ravelry.com. Jane Watson started the group just for Memphis area fiber enthusiasts who are on the social network site, Ravelry.com. The site is a networking and resource site mostly for knitters, crocheters, and spinners, though there are a few groups for weavers. Memphis Ravelers is the place to visit to find out about local fiber events and opportunities, and to share your thoughts, your projects, to ask advice (fiber or otherwise), or just to talk about nothing. People interested in joining Ravelry, can go to www.Ravelry.com and ask for an invitation. It may take a day or two to get accepted as the site is growing. Once in, click on the "groups" button and search for Memphis Ravelers.

Spinning Wheels for sale

Antique spinning wheel from the Netherlands for sale $150. Extra bobbin included.
It is in good working order, but since it is old it is not for production spinning; too labor intensive.
Contact Sylvia, 901-867-9551

1. - Older model Majacraft Susie in great working order. It has the wheel with no design in it but is otherwise the same as the current model. It comes with the 3 bobbins, the original regular whorl and a slow speed whorl that is currently attached. It has a few dings from normal use. A new wheel with the extra whorl would sell for over $800 - This one is priced at $725. I love this wheel as I have a newer model. This owner of this one is in a nursing home and can no longer spin and I don't need 2 of the same wheel.

2 - For someone who is looking for an inexpensive starter wheel, this is a good choice -- "Fidelis" spinning wheel from Heavenly Handspinning. You can get more details of this wheel at: http://www.heavenlyhandspinning.com/e-commerce-solutions-catalog.html

It is very light weight and is irish tension -- the bobbins are really big!
It is a finished version of the red oak and comes with 6 bobbins ( 3 more than comes with the wheel purchase alone) and a lazy kate. New from Heavenly Handspinning this wheel sells for $195 unfinished and 3 extra bobbins for an additional $24.
This wheel has been used for less than 10 hours. I would like to sell it for $100 as the person I got it for has decided that spinning is not for them and I would rather have the space it is in to store more fiber as it is only collecting dust at my house.

If interested, please contact: ksaunderstn (at) bellsouth (dot) net or 901-652-6999 (cell).

Weaving Classes

Member Felicitas Sloves will be teaching another rigid heddle weaving class at the Memphis Botanic Garden. It will be a one day workshop from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, February 7.
It is called "Weave a Scarf for Your Valentine". Knitters can bring yarn from their stash - a smooth sportweight yarn for warp and a textured yarn for weft. Of course, handspun is encouraged as well! I will also have closeouts from Webs available for $3 a ball if anyone wants to weave with these. I will supply all the looms and weaving tools for use during the class. Everyone will have a scarf to take off of the looms and take home at the end of the day. The cost of the workshop is $60 for members of Memphis Botanic Garden and $65 for non-members. Call the Botanic Garden's Adult Education Department 901-576-4128 to register. Anyone interested can also contact me directly: memphisweaver (at) gmail (dot) com or 901-734-8480.

Member Angela Schneider is teaching another Weave-a-Scarf-in-a-Day workshop with the Memphis Guild of Handloom Weavers on Saturday, January 31, 10am-4pm. Looms are already set, up, all materials and use of equipment are included in the $40 class fee. See the MGHW website (our sister site) for more information: www.memphisfiberarts.org/weave or call Angela at 901-758-9037.
