Friendship Coverlet Guidelines

Revision: February 18, 2007

Warp and tabby weft: UKI 10/2 cotton in Natural color

Sett: 24 epi

Weft: Jaggerspun Maine Line 2/8 wool or UKI 5/2 cotton

Edges of block: 12 threads on each side of block for straight draw (~1/2" selvedges) plus 2-thread floating selvedges each side (+28 ends in addition to pattern design)

Pattern: 4+ Harness Overshot

Pattern size: 20"x 20" squares.

Measuring Squares: Measure the length of squares with the tension off.  Be sure to measure your pattern in inches using small increments while you are weaving the square to make sure you will weave the correct length. Try using adding machine paper, as described in Osterkamp’s Weaving and Drafting Your Own Cloth.

Warp ends: Total = 508 ends (24 epi x 20" = 480 ends + 28 ends for selvedges and floating selvedges). Add a few extra ends for mis-counting if you desire.

Number of squares: Total = 21 squares (20 squares for Queen coverlet + 1 square for Guild). Queen coverlet = 4 x 5 squares.

Hems and finishing blocks (squares)

1. 1" spacer between blocks
2. Hem stitch: each stitch 2 rows deep x 4 ends wide
3. 14 pics plain weave with thin cotton weft
4. 20" overshot block (square)
5. 14 pics plain weave with thin cotton weft
6. Hem stitch: each stitch 2 rows deep x 4 ends wide
7. 1" spacer between blocks

Squares for group members: There are 12 group members. First weave 13 squares for the group members and Guild. For the remaining squares for the coverlet, group members will decide who to trade squares with.

Weft for one block: Calculate the amount of weft to weave one block. Wind off that amount to give to other group members to weave their blocks for you. (Maine Line wool is approximately 2-1/2 oz or 72g.)
